Choosing the right transformer can feel overwhelming – there are dozens of specifications and options. But if you follow a step-by-step process, the decision becomes clear.
This guide will walk you through 7 key steps to select the best transformer for your application.
Step 1: Determine the Required Capacity (kVA or MVA)
The most important parameter. Capacity is measured in kVA (kilovolt-amperes) for smaller units or MVA for large power transformers.
How to calculate approximate kVA:
For a three-phase transformer:
kVA = (Voltage × Current × √3) / 1000
If you know your load in kW:
kVA = kW / Power Factor (typically 0.8-0.9)
Practical tip: Add 20-30% margin for future expansion or temporary overloads. Do not oversize by more than 50% – efficiency drops at very low loads.
Step 2: Identify Input and Output Voltage
You need to know:
Primary voltage (input side) – what voltage enters the transformer
Secondary voltage (output side) – what voltage your equipment needs
Common voltages:
Low voltage: 400V, 480V, 690V
Medium voltage: 11kV, 33kV, 35kV, 66kV
High voltage: 110kV, 132kV, 220kV
Also specify: Number of phases (single-phase or three-phase) and frequency (50Hz or 60Hz).
Step 3: Choose Transformer Type – Oil-Immersed or Dry-Type?
This is one of the biggest decisions. Use this quick guide:
|
If your project is… |
Recommended type |
|
Outdoor substation |
Oil-immersed |
|
Indoor electrical room |
Dry-type |
|
High-rise building |
Dry-type |
|
Industrial plant (outdoor) |
Oil-immersed |
|
Hospital / data center |
Dry-type |
|
Solar or wind farm |
Oil-immersed |
|
Tunnel / metro |
Dry-type |
For a more detailed comparison, see our guide: Oil-Immersed vs Dry-Type Transformer.
Step 4: Consider Installation Environment
Your transformer must survive where it is placed. Answer these questions:
Indoor or outdoor?
Outdoor units need weatherproofing (IP rating) and UV-resistant paint.
Ambient temperature?
High temperatures (>40°C) require derating or enhanced cooling.
Altitude?
Above 1000m, air cooling is less effective – specify altitude design.
Pollution / dust / salt spray?
Harsh environments need higher IP rating and corrosion-resistant coatings.
Step 5: Confirm Required Standards and Certifications
Different countries require different certifications. Check with your local authority or customer.
|
Region |
Common standards |
|
Europe |
IEC 60076, CE mark |
|
USA |
IEEE C57.12, UL listed |
|
Canada |
CSA C88 |
|
Middle East |
IEC or BS |
|
Australia |
AS 60076 |
|
International |
ISO 9001 (supplier quality) |
Always ask your supplier for certified test reports (type tests, routine tests).
Step 6: Specify Cooling Method
Cooling affects size, cost, and overload capacity.
For oil-immersed transformers:
ONAN – natural oil, natural air (most common)
ONAF – natural oil, forced air (adds fans for higher capacity)
OFAN – forced oil, forced air (for large units)
For dry-type transformers:
AN – natural air (standard)
AF – forced air (fans for extra capacity)
Tell your supplier the maximum ambient temperature and any short-time overload requirements.
Step 7: Evaluate Supplier – Beyond Price
Price is important, but these factors matter just as much:
|
Factor |
What to check |
|
Experience |
How long in business? Any reference projects? |
|
Certifications |
ISO9001, CE, UL, etc. – request copies |
|
Lead time |
Standard vs urgent delivery |
|
Warranty |
Typical 1-3 years; what does it cover? |
|
Spare parts |
Availability and cost of common parts |
|
After-sales support |
24/7 technical help? On-site service? |
